At Superfile, we’re planning a focused development sprint over the next ~2 months to improve the product based on what matters most to active users.

We have limited resources and can’t fix everything at once, so prioritization is needed. This is a short survey to figure out what is most important for our users, and get feedback on what is being done well, and what is the biggest problem.

Note - Very big features might not be prioritised unless there is a huge demand, as they take a lot of time :)

superfile has been the best terminal file xplorer in recent month since i started using it. I'm suggesting if you can improve this feature -- I'm using neovim , with lazygit as one of the plugins installed, however when using superfile as opposed to yazi, it doesn't show the directory of a project im working on when i naviigate to lazygit to push my changes ( i find blank screen -- likely showing superfile didn't pick my current working directory)

@crisprtech Sorry, but I cannot understand this. I dont use lazygit, or many neovim plugins. What does navigate to lazygit means? Its a tool, not a directory, right? Is the issue that you are describing a plugin issue?

Can you clearly give a problem statement, minimal reproducible example, and what is superfile expected to do?

superfile meets 80 percent of all my needs in a file manager and I like it a lot, but there are some things I would like to see:

1. Configuring default apps per file type. I implemented this feature myself, pls accept my pr:)
2. Proper root usage. I sometimes need to use spf as root, and it really annoys me that there is a different root config, and that it still does not see all the files in /root. I understand that it is not very easy to fix.
3. Faster navigation binds - scrolling n entries at once, like 5. I will try to do that myself as well, however
   Anyways, I am very grateful that you guys created spf, it is so much easier to configure than yazi

  - For quick access to local files and folders : it's perfect and efficient
  - For external drives or network volumes, it requires manual mounting via a classical file explorer (e.g. Nautilus) which makes sudently superfile obsolete/useless

• Is there anything that consistently frustrates or annoys you?

  • Installation through a script is not convenient (security concerns + no updates), and there is no visible superfile application. We cannot launch superfile directly from the system launcher. For instance, Neovim can be started from a terminal (of course), but also from the app drawer / app launcher, depending on the distro.
  • custom keybindings would be usefull
  • quick access to a (dynamic) cheatsheet would be a banger, as each app has it's own habits. It's easy to get mess and painfull to go the the repo to read the doc.

A .desktop file is useful -- not so it can show up in app launchers, but so other programs know to use it when clicking buttons like "open folder" or "see file in context". As for TUI managers not having one, yazi, ranger, and nnn all actually do.

@booth-w Wow. I didn't knew superfile had one. So, how can users use that file? I suppose they can just copy the file to their system, and thats it.

Desktop files can go in either /usr/share/applications/ or ~/.local/share/applications. I just updated the AUR package superfile-git to copy it over on install but I don't know what other install methods include it.

Like the config entry?
First you compile it from my fork just like you would usually install superfile (but i can simply send you the compiled binary as well)
Then in your config (in the very end of it, since toml has problems with closing tables) you add something like:

Now it will simply work) No additional keybinds required (this is a part of the regular opening function, just selected the file and press Enter/whatever key you set to "confirm"), Also unchanged, current main spf has no problems with this config and will not report any errors reading it.

What is worth mentioning is that it does not work on Windows yet, only Linux and Mac. I am working on windows support as well.

Fist I want to thank all the people who worked on this project and helped improving it, you are such a great community and I am happy to be part of it.
SPF is one of the best terminal apps I used and it is my daily driver for 90% of the time, I know it is not as feature rich as something like Dolphin or Nautilus but it gets the job done and more, and being in the terminal allows for fast command execution which comes in handy for when SPF lacks in some places.

That been said, there are some improvements I would like to see: (there are some entries that got mentioned here before but I'm gonna repeat them as they are important for me)

1. as @litvinov-git mentioned having a faster navigation binds, it can be specified config.toml file to be e.g.

# Moving multiple lines at a time, '0' will instantly teleports to the first/last entry
fast_moving = 31

2. This got mentioned here before but I kinda have a different approach. Having an open with option like what you would see in GUI file managers, this will follow a config file that have all apps that can open this file extension (side note: I think that keybind for this should be "o" and the keybind for the sort list should be "#" or "@")
   e.g for the config file

txt = ['mico', 'nvim', 'nano']

this will override the system defaults and the first option will be the default (in the previous example is micro), if the extension type is not specified it will follow the system default. The open with option will show the whole list
also this can add an open with options to directories too

3. as @AntoineBarj mentioned, packaging the app will make it easier to install and update specially with package managers, it can have a PPA (Personal Package Archive) for Debian/Ubuntu based distros, and can be added to the AUR for Arch based distros

4. better support for Shell Mode and SPF Mode

   • Shell Mode: when typing a command that requires sudo, after entering the password the UI glitches, also it would be useful if it can benefit from the actual device's shell configuration like aliases and plugins, or at least add autocomplete for the directory please
     I know this might be super hard to implement but if it can run a full shell inside SPF (how tmux runs a shell inside a shell) that would be the ultimate implementation
   • SPF Mode: it is so useful but I wish if it has autocomplete for the directories too

5. add icons to the pinned directories when nerd font is enabled and the ability to pin files not just directories

6. add the Trash bin the to the default directories, it is so easy just add ~/.local/share/Trash with the trash icon

7. add support to remote drives like nextcloud, googledrive, onedrive, etc ...

Support for remote would require saved tokens, similar to rclone's current functionality. We'd need to add a secure token storage and handler as well, then. It's possible but it would be tedious unless we simply wrapped an existing implementation for remote access.

It would be great if Superfile could support custom user scripts in the context menu, similar to how Nautilus (GNOME Files) handles it.

In Nautilus, users can place executable scripts in the directory:

~/.local/share/nautilus/scripts/

Then, those scripts automatically appear in the context menu when right-clicking files or folders. This allows users to easily create their own file actions without modifying the file manager itself.

For example, I maintain a set of useful scripts here:

Having similar functionality in Superfile would make it much more flexible and customizable for power users.

Suggested behavior:

• Add a configurable directory for user scripts (e.g. ~/.local/share/superfile/scripts/).
• Show available scripts in the context menu based on the selected file(s) or folder(s).
• Optionally, pass file paths as arguments to the scripts.

This would be a simple but powerful feature to extend Superfile’ functionality and help users automate tasks.
