Kodi has no sound and I don't know whether to blame Kodi, EasyEffects, GNOME, or kernel 6.19

Describe the bug

It turns out I have—I don't know if it's a bug or an error, and I don't know who to blame, whether it's GNOME, EasyEffects, or the 6.19 kernel. I'm using Arch Linux, which I updated recently, and I use Kodi to manage all my movies and TV shows. I see that everything has sound, but everything else has sound except Kodi. I'm using my sound settings as usual; I haven't changed anything except for the kernel update or the EasyEffects update. I've uninstalled Kodi and everything related to it, but nothing. I've uninstalled EasyEffects, and still nothing. And strangely enough, the only way I can get Kodi to work through EasyEffects is by having the GNOME sound options open. If I close the Control Panel or switch to Display or Networking, the Kodi sound disappears. I go back to the GNOME sound options, and it comes back, and I don't understand why. The other way I can get Kodi's sound to work is by disabling it, I had EasyEffects installed from the Arch repository and I installed it via Flatpak, and it's the same.

Expected Behavior

I want Easy Effects to work as it always has, starting automatically without having to have the GNOME sound options open.

Found a similar issue on CachyOS with pulsemeeter. Pipewire updated to 1.6.0. If I dowgrade back to 1.4.10 the issue disappears. If you use pipewire, maybe the same for you?

sudo downgrade pipewire libpipewire=1:1.4.10-2 gst-plugin-pipewire pipewire-alsa pipewire-audio pipewire-pulse (Select all 1.4.10 versions)

Found a similar issue on CachyOS with pulsemeeter. Pipewire updated to 1.6.0. If I dowgrade back to 1.4.10 the issue disappears. If you use pipewire, maybe the same for you?

I'm a bit of a novice in that area and I'm afraid of breaking the system by downgrading Pipewire, and I've done so much cleaning, I even deleted the cache, used Stacer and some commands to clean the system :(

The risk should be fairly minimal. After you downgrade just don't add it to your pkgignore when it asks. Then next time you update it'll just push you back to the version you're currently on. If your arch is on btrfs you could create a snapshot first with snapper, timeshift, or just manually with btrfs commands.

You could check the pacman log to see when your arch upgrade pipewire and see if it aligns with the timeframe of the issue for a better idea before doing it. grep pipewire /var/log/pacman.log

Other than that I'm really thinking it's something in that 1.6.0 update

Hum... I have been using PipeWire 1.6.0 on Arch Linux for a while and it has been almost 100% fine so far. The only strange behavior I remember were my devices not being detected. But that somehow was fixed after deleting the folder ~/.local/state/wireplumber/ and rebooting.

Opening other audio players or apps like Pavucontrol will probably do the same. It is probably not related to gnome. EasyEffects only keeps its pipeline active if there is an audio stream playing to or recording from its virtual devices. The level meters gnome settings is linking to our virtual devices are probably doing that. The question is why is not happening the same with Kodi.

I decided to try and reproduce it on my very fresh VM that I created to test my pulsemeeter issue. My issue was that applications such as vesktop could not grab my microphone when pulsemeeter was open. Installing Kodi and EasyEffects on 1.6.0 replicates the issue, then dropping back to 1.4.10 for it and it's dependencies resolves it

Also, indeed opening the KDE audio mixer does restore audio, but didn't get it in video

I installed Kodi and I can reproduce the issue here on my computer. I've noticed something interesting. While Kodi was playing audio I executed pw-dot and opened the generated dot file with xdot. Kodi is linked to our virtual sink. And the filters are linked too. So the issue is not what I thought it was. But there is one problem. PipeWire did not set the filters links to the active state. When Kodi is playing they are set to the paused state. No wonder there is no audio.

This together with the fact that downgrading pipewire fixes the issue suggests they have a regression. The links state is entirely handled by pipewire.

Mmmm... I'm not certain. I don't actually use easyeffects beyond some messing with it awhile ago so I didn't even realize. The spectrum doesn't appear on my fresh VM nor my normal machine, both cachyos KDE.

This may be the reason why it does not work in the vm machine. Maybe Qt is facing some kind of problem with the gpu driver in the host too.

Looks like I had none of the optional dependencies. Installing all of them now shows the spectrum activity. Sorry for the side quest 😅

I think this should be reported to PipeWire's developers. At least on my computer only Kodi seems to be affected by this regression. And unless a PipeWire developer tries to use it together with EasyEffects they will never know this problem is there.
