Compatibility with Bootstrap versions

Bootstrap v4 is going to happen at some point and it wont be backwards compatible with v3 so how should we handle [Bootlint's] compatibility with different versions of Bootstrap?
Should we:
a) just stick to independent versions for Bootlint
b) keep the major version in sync with Bootstrap
c) keep separate major versions and make Bootlint work for different versions of Bootstrap

I think that Bootlint being a linter, it should work independent of Bootstrap's versions. Ideally, we should somehow identify Bootstrap v4, and handle the errors/warnings differently if needed.

At some point, it would make sense to drop v3 support though, like with v2; we could bump the major version then.

I guess it would be fair to drop v3 support the same time Bootstrap drops it. Keeping the major versions in sync just makes it easier to identify which version of Bootstrap it works with.

Yeah, my plan was:

• independent versioning
• drop v3 support when v4 comes out [Edit: when Bootstrap itself drops v3 support]
• increment the major version number when Bootlint switches to Bootstrap v4

But as I understood it v3 doesn't reach its EOL immediately when v4 is released, we did plan on supporting it for a couple of extra months, no?

Okay, per Slack discussion, we'll maintain a separate branch for Bootstrap v3 after Bootstrap v4 is released, until such time as Bootstrap itself drops support for v3.

Yup, but how are we gonna go about it here? Also maintain two branches?

Yeah, that was my thought:

• master = for current stable Bootstrap (now: v3; after v4's stable release: v4)
• bootstrap-3 = for Bootstrap v3 during the grace period
