Upgraded docker to 29.0.0 (https://docs.docker.com/engine/release-notes/29/)

Same problem here.

My host is a Debian 12 and the official Docker package was updated today.

Apparently it has now a minimum 1.44 level API requirement and it's rejecting connections:

Server: Docker Engine - Community

Downgraded Docker to previous version and Traefik works again:

Same here on Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS.

I just updated to Docker 29 and it broke. It seems Docker upped the minimum API version.

1.24 is so wildly old. I hope it wont take too long to release a new version.

to revert on ubuntu i did

# to get available version
apt-cache madison docker-ce

# install specific version
apt-get install docker-ce=5:28.5.2-1~ubuntu.24.04~noble \
                     docker-ce-cli=5:28.5.2-1~ubuntu.24.04~noble \
                     containerd.io docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-plugin

Also I am using this command to pause updates on Docker until the issue gets resolved:

sudo apt-mark hold docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-plugin

That should stop Unattened Upgrades or a poorly planned sudo apt update -y && sudo apt upgrade (I'm guilty of that) from updating.

I adapted @rafipiccolo's command for Debian 13, in case anyone needs it:

sudo apt-get install docker-ce=5:28.5.2-1~debian.13~trixie \
docker-ce-cli=5:28.5.2-1~debian.13~trixie \
containerd.io=2.1.5-1~debian.13~trixie \
docker-buildx-plugin=0.28.0-0~debian.13~trixie \
docker-compose-plugin=2.40.2-1~debian.13~trixie

to downgrade Docker to version 28.

Anybody needs it for Ubuntu 22.04

We also run into the same issue in Debian 13 (Trixie).
Downgrading docker-ce & docker-ce-cli was enough:

apt-get install docker-ce=5:28.5.2-1~debian.13~trixie docker-ce-cli=5:28.5.2-1~debian.13~trixie

To avoid automatic / unattended upgrades, you can set the docker packages on hold:

apt-mark hold docker-ce docker-ce-cli

For distros with dnf:

sudo dnf remove docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-plugin -y
sudo dnf install -y docker-ce-28.0.1-1.el9 docker-ce-cli-28.0.1-1.el9 containerd.io

and to lock the version:

sudo dnf install 'dnf-command(versionlock)'
sudo dnf versionlock add docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io
