minor annoyance bug regarding comments

I've found the editing of comments in a "box of asterisks" style sometimes gets the syntax highlighting confused, causing it to interpret part of the comment as code. The attached png image shows an example. I stumbled across the fact that doing a ":set list" makes it reinterpret the comment correctly.

I would appreciate guidance on the correct behaviour here, as changing settings seems like the wrong approach for a syntax file.
