Slow navigation

Back-button navigation is very slow, the local back-button action takes about 4.5 seconds. I'm on Emacs 26.3 and Windows 10, running on a new gaming laptop with an i7-9750H (2.60GHz) processor and 16 GB RAM.

The problem seems to have to do with back-button-spacer-char and back-button-thumb-char, which are extremely slow to render for me. This workaround makes back-button fast for me:

(setq back-button-spacer-char ?.)
(setq back-button-thumb-char ?o)

So there seems to be some glitch in Windows rendering. I'm not sure if I should close this issue or not. If other people are experiencing the same problem on Windows, perhaps back-button should detect Windows and fall back to the default . and o characters?

Thanks, that's a good find! I'll test on Windows, though I don't have Windows 10.
