Obviously, they have no intention of providing a means to delete/remove payment methods.
Having worked for large corporations such as microsoft in the past, I know why they engineer their system this way though I'm rather disgusted by it. Ethics are completely remiss in large companies.

It is very simple to delete a payment method (if you used your credit card)
just block it, then try to sponsor anything. Your bank will obviously decline it, so github automatically removes it.
Then you can unblock your card and continue the use of it as normal.

For PayPal, you can revoke access for GitHub, that means GitHub still stores the PayPal payment method, but has no permission at all to actually make transactions with that. Once you need to use that PayPal again you just need to attach it again to your GitHub, so PayPal will provide GitHub a new permission token.

Meanwhile credit card would disappear, PayPal remains displayed. Kinda weird and very unpleasant to have it implemented like that from Microsoft... I hate it. Everytime I use my card at ANY websites I immedieatly search for the option to delete it.

Same here guys. It's just so so annoying. I don't want to purchase any further services. I already got charged for github co-pilot after my free trial ended, because apparently, I couldn't cancel the subscription on time, since I was getting a server error on github billing & plans page. Later, got caught up in work and forgot that I had to remove it. Tried many times again last night, and encountered the same error. Finally got it removed but now I can't get rid of the billing info. I don't wanna get charged for any other services accidentally. But I'm stuck with this nonsense. I don't see a point in saving such sensitive info without the free will of a user.

If any of the GitHub representatives are seeing this, please take this as constructive criticism and look into this issue, because it's just unethical and not worth the hustle.

It seems that restoring the paypal account might even be harder. They blocked my old one because it was linked to a sanctioned location, and to register a new one they require residence ID from non-sanctioned countries that I don't have...

According to GitHub support, you need to not have any subscription services active, this includes any free marketplace apps you have signed up for. (Extra CI Services, etc.)

According to our terms, if you have any active Marketplace app subscription, then the payment method needs to be on file as payments are automatic and we do not have a way to offer manual payments. On your account, I can see that the marketplace subscription is active, while it is $0, it is still considered a paid subscription so we will need the payment details on file.

And once removed, you'll be able to remove your payment information.

You can only remove the payment method if the account has no active subscriptions. You can cancel the Marketplace app by following the below guide:

• Go to Settings and look for "Billing and Licensing"
• Under that click "Additional billing details"
• Then click on the Marketplace app. Then Edit > Cancel plan

I was able to finally remove my details after removing the marketplace apps, Azure and Circus CI for example. Hope this helps!

Why is it so complicated?
GitHub ties payment methods to billing for subscriptions—even free or trial ones. Removing a method while any subscription is active could block auto-renewals that GitHub relies on. That’s why you must first cancel or downgrade everything linked to billing. When that’s done, the option to remove the payment method becomes available. And if it’s still not there, support will assist you directly.

Has anybody tried delinking their payment card from the third party app that was used through GitHub to make the payment typically you're going to have it linked to a Google wallet or a Bitcoin while it a crypto wallet or some other payment third party app like zelle or cash app any of those natures try deleting your card because typically cloud services are going to stay connected to the endpoint even if you were to delete your account or your repositories it still does not fundamentally delete the records or the access from those transactions without totally removing the card from the third party servicer not all of them are going to do that either only certain third party apps that are indoor store affiliated or bipartisanely connected to GitHub

Thanks for sharing the screenshot — looks like GitHub has updated the UI. The ‘Billing and licensing’ section replaces the older ‘Billing & plans’ menu, and instead of ‘Manage payment methods,’ you’ll only see an Edit option.

If you want to remove the card entirely, usually you’ll need to either:

Add a new payment method first, then set it as default and remove the old one.

Or, if you only have one card on file, GitHub requires you to contact GitHub Support to remove it, since at least one method needs to stay linked for paid accounts.

I'm facing the same issue, but my account is a newly created GitHub account. Can I resolve the problem by removing the GitHub account directly?
This might sound a little stupid but have you tried delinking your credit card that you used from your phone and the payment method that it went through typically something like that is stored on the third party payment app such as Google wallet PayPal zelle etc that's not going to change because they're all cloud services even if you were to remove your GitHub account if you still haven't credit card with the third party app and that app is still connected to the GitHub the information is bipartisan affiliated if that makes sense.
