In GitHub.com (web interface):
Currently there's no global toggle for this in your GitHub account settings - it's
controlled per-client.

Quick workaround:
If you're using the command line, Copilot won't interfere. You can also just ignore
the suggestions and type your own message - they won't auto-apply unless you accept
them.

This is insane.

I just had to add a new line just to get rid of the garbage Copilot spit out in the lower description field. I didn't ask for this!

if you are using vs code, you can actually toggle it anytime when you want to use it or not easily (not having to go to the settings everytime)
just click the github copilot icon on the bottom right part of you editor

I don't use VSCode. I have no use for Copilot at all. I turned everything off I could in the settings here on GitHub.

GitHub Copilot, particularly the GitHub Copilot Chat extension in Visual Studio, can suggest commit messages automatically. To disable this feature, follow these steps:

Method 1: Disabling the Commit Message Feature (Visual Studio 2022)
This is the most direct way to control the specific feature in Visual Studio.

Go to Tools in the Visual Studio menu bar.

Select Options.

In the left pane, navigate to GitHub (or GitHub Copilot Chat if it's a newer version/layout).

Look for a setting related to commit messages, usually named:

"Enable commit message suggestions"

Uncheck the box next to this option.

Click OK to save the changes.
