Confusing setting "Enable Container Tabs" under Privacy

With a brand new Firefox profile, if I go to Preferences, Privacy, I do not see an "Enable Container Tabs" checkbox.

Once I have installed the Firefox Multi-Account Containers add-on from the add-ons directory, that setting appears and is checked by default. This checkbox seems redundant, after all, if the add-on is enabled, surely the feature of containers should be enabled as well.

Here is the most confusing part: if I disable the Firefox Multi-Account Containers add-on, containers contain to work, and the checkbox "Enable Container Tabs" continues to appear under Preferences, Privacy.

I would expect either the enabling of the add-on to control activation of containers, or the checkbox under Preferences, Privacy, but not a weird mixture of both.

@Flimm The first part sounds normal although perhaps a little unexpected, the second part about containers still working is a little odd. Are you saying the checkbox is present or that it is checked?

What other extensions do you have enabled?
How did you disable Multi-Account Containers?
Could you paste what is in about:support?
If you go to about:config and search userContext what preferences do you have and what are they set to?

@Flimm in Firefox Nightly the Containers isn't an add-on, but is embedded! so the preference checkbox make sense...

Sounds to me like @Flimm is using Beta/Dev edition though as that explains the not present setting priot to installing the addon.

In the case of Beta the outcome of removing all container addons should be:

• The checkbox is still present but not checked
• The addons are all removed
• No addon is listed above the checkbox (sometimes with temp installed extensions they aren't removed correctly)
• Containers features should be removed like the + lonpress etc.

Please double check you haven't installed other container addons.

I'm using Firefox 55.0.2 (64-bit) on Ubuntu 17.10. Ubuntu 17.10 has not been released yet, but if I'm correct, this is not a beta version of Firefox.

1. I've run Firefox using firefox -p, and created a new profile. At this point, there is no containers checkbox in Preferences, Privacy. At this point, the only extension installed in "Ubuntu Modifications".

2. I then install Firefox Multi-Account Containers add-on. Containers now work, and there is a checkbox for containers under Preferences, Privacy.

3. I then disable the Firefox Multi-Account Containers add-on, by going to the add-ons list in my browser and clicking "disable". I open Preferences, Privacy again and the checkbox is still there. The container functionality still works. I restart Firefox and open the same profile, and I still have the same results. Here is the result of about:support:

Maybe contentious. Consider non-extended use of Firefox containers (integral to the browser); and use with extensions other than Multi-Account Containers.

The checkbox is controlled by privacy.userContext.ui.enabled it should be always visible after having installed a container addon:

The same behaviour is in Firefox 57+ too, if you install a container addon it will keep the native checkbox there.

There might be a chance that this code isn't running: https://github.com/mozilla/multi-account-containers/blob/master/bootstrap.js#L135 however given the timeline of 57+ I don't think it's worth fixing this as 57 native code will fix this.

I don't think this is an issue at all, given that other add-ons in 55/56 require the install of "Multi-Account Containers."

I'm going to close this as I don't think we have any actionable items other than rip out the <57 Firefox code which I can do elsewhere to not confuse this discussion.

Looks like the uninstall method doesn't get disables. I fixed this in my PR.
