Additional API Testing for GEP-3171

This PR adds additional tests for API changes made in #3283.

I'm waiting for a kubernetes-sigs member to verify that this patch is reasonable to test. If it is, they should reply with /ok-to-test on its own line. Until that is done, I will not automatically test new commits in this PR, but the usual testing commands by org members will still work. Regular contributors should join the org to skip this step.

Once the patch is verified, the new status will be reflected by the ok-to-test label.

I understand the commands that are listed here.

Yeah sorry - I'm a little new to github. I think I need to do some rebasing to get rid of the old commits that aren't relevant.

Ok I've fixed my working branch and gotten rid of all those previous unrelated commits, but I did have to create a new PR. If we could scoot our way over to #3302, we can hopefully get this show on the road. Sorry for the confusion!
