Example is silent

Hi, should the play_midi example should actually produce sound when supplied a MIDI file?

cargo run --example play_midi --features="midir" -- MIDI_sample.mid

It compiles and prints "starting playback" but I just get silence.

Running timidity MIDI_sample.mid does indeed play audio.

I'm guessing it's connecting to the loopback midi port.
You can run

cargo run --example play_midi --features="midir" -- --list

To list MIDI devices, and then run

cargo run --example play_midi --features="midir" -- -d 1

(Connects to port 1, change it to whatever port you might get.)

I get:

#0: Midi Through:Midi Through Port-0 14:0

and providing -d 0 (or -d 14) is still silent.

The midi through port is an auxiliary port. It doesn't have sound.

The problem then becomes why it's not listing other ports. The part of the example code that deals with that just uses midir.

To make sure, that's every port it prints when you run with -l, right?

Yes, that's every port printed when run with -l.

Is the difference between timidity and nodi that timidity is directly synthesizing audio and sending it to my speakers, whereas nodi outputs midi and my system should be synthesizing it to actual audio?

If that's the case, I guess this is just a problem with my system I should go and fix, so you can go ahead and close this issue with thanks!

Oh, yeah. Timidity is a synth. The example here just sends MIDI events to a system synth.
