A regression was introduced in fontdb 0.17, which prevented symlinks from being traversed during the font search on unices. This regression was corrected in 0.19. Due to incorrect versioning in that crate ecosystem versions need to be manually bumped, even for compatible changes.
This upgrade will need to occur after: pop-os/cosmic-text#296 is merged and published.
Tested the tour locally and all seems to be good. libcosmic must be updated after this.
