Alternative considered: Using nested query data from resources. That would work in some cases, but it doesn't always match. We could use it as a default unless specified explicitly... but the number of fine-grained resources is small enough that we could also just always require specifying this explicitly. I'm not sure having a default would be a significant benefit.
