Implement MCP OAuth (Authorization) #6282

Description

Validations

  • I believe this is a way to improve. I'll try to join the Continue Discord for questions
  • I'm not able to find an open issue that requests the same enhancement

Problem

MCP has added Oauth authorization to it's specification. To allow the use of commercial and internally developed MCP servers continue should support Oauth authorizatoin for MCP servers and tools.

https://modelcontextprotocol.io/specification/2025-03-26/basic/authorization

Solution

Implement OAuth authorization into the Vscode and IntelliJ extensions. When activating an MCP server that requires authorization the user should be redirected to a browser session to login, and then the client tokens should be sent back vscode or initelliJ to store the token securely so it can be refreshed and used in the MCP flows.
