Skopeo has not yet been packaged for Windows. There is an [open feature
request](https://github.com/containers/skopeo/issues/715) and contributions are
always welcome.

Skopeo does not have an official Windows binary release yet
([#715](https://github.com/containers/skopeo/issues/715)).
The following options are available for Windows users.

#### Option 1 — Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL 2) — Recommended

The simplest approach on Windows 10/11 is to install WSL 2 and then install
skopeo inside the Linux distribution of your choice.

1. [Enable WSL 2](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/install) and
install a Linux distribution (e.g. Ubuntu):

wsl --install
```

2. Open a WSL terminal and follow the Fedora / Ubuntu / Debian installation
steps above, for example on Ubuntu:

```bash
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y install skopeo
```

3. Run skopeo from within the WSL terminal as you would on Linux.

#### Option 2 — Container Image via Docker or Podman

If you already have Docker Desktop or Podman Desktop installed you can run
skopeo without installing it natively at all:

**Docker:**
```powershell
docker run quay.io/skopeo/stable:latest copy --help
```

**Podman Desktop / Podman:**
```powershell
podman run quay.io/skopeo/stable:latest copy --help
```

To copy an image from one registry to another:
```powershell
docker run quay.io/skopeo/stable:latest copy \
docker://docker.io/library/ubuntu:24.04 \
docker://registry.example.com/ubuntu:24.04
```

#### Option 3 — Cross-compile from Linux / macOS

If you have a Linux or macOS build environment, you can produce a
Windows binary using the cross-compilation target:

```bash
# Build a Windows AMD64 binary from Linux / macOS
make bin/skopeo.windows.amd64
```

This creates `bin/skopeo.windows.amd64.exe`. Copy the binary to your
Windows machine and run it from a Command Prompt or PowerShell.

> **Important:** The cross-compiled binary uses the
> `containers_image_openpgp` build tag (no CGO), which disables features
> that depend on `libgpgme`. GPG signing and verification are therefore
> not available in the Windows binary.

#### Option 4 — Scoop (community package)

A community-maintained [Scoop](https://scoop.sh) manifest may be available
for skopeo. Check the Scoop bucket directory for the latest status:
