It has to happen IMO. OpenSSL 1.1.1 is supported for about another year upstream, and then it'll stop receiving security updates (even though it'll take much longer to fade away):

[2018/09/11]: After two years of work we are excited to be releasing our latest version today - OpenSSL 1.1.1. This is also our new Long Term Support (LTS) version and so we are committing to support it for at least five years.

The failure here is primarily a fallout of conda-forge/spdlog-feedstock#50
