I noticed the release tarball you are referencing does not contain the binary - could you modify to use the platform-specific tar.gz file? (i.e. helm-push_0.8.1_darwin_amd64.tar.gz vs. v0.8.1.tgz)

There is a bug in commit 1 indeed, I didn't call mkdir if v0.8.1.tar.gz exists so the tar xzf will fail.
But I didn't understand this:

If I understand the script correctly, the name v0.8.1.tar.gz is specified by curl or wget options -o/-O?

I'm not sure it is the expected solution. But I found a way to install the plugin with a local file without using the helm plugin install command: #161
