org agenda matching does not seem to work (always presents an empty list)

Expected behavior

the org agenda view should work, and show matching tasks.

Actual behavior

I always get an org agenda with no tasks, even if there are ones that match. The only lines in my org agenda window are (as an example):

Headlines with TAGS match: org
Press ‘C-u r’ to search again

Steps to reproduce the problem

create an org file with a bunch of TODO items with tags. Now trigger org-agenda, and press any key (I've tried both t, and m with the same "empty list" result).

My apologies; I'm still in the process of figuring Org mode out. It turns out that the tutorial that I was following did not mention org-agenda-files, which I needed to populate... Once I did that, org-agenda views started working.
