Description
Breaking changes
The ubuntu-latest label is ready to become the default version for Ubuntu 26.04.
Target date
This change will be rolled out over a period of several weeks beginning October 19, 2026.
We plan to complete the migration by November 19, 2026.
The motivation for the changes
Ubuntu 26.04 has completed its public preview period and is generally available for production workloads.
We have monitored customer feedback and image stability, and are now ready to set it as the latest version for the x64 ubuntu-latest label.
Possible impact
Workflows and pipelines that depend on Ubuntu 24.04-specific software, package versions, system libraries, compilers, or prebuilt binaries may be affected.

This issue says that Java 17 is still default in Ubuntu 26.04, but README here says that default is version 25. So which is true?

Can someone update the description of this issue and ensure that new notifications are sent to everyone? Stating that default Java version will be 17 and emailing everyone with this link, and then finding a month later that that it will be 25 is a major breaking change for a lot of pipelines.
While at it, please fix other incorrect versions in the table of the description of this issue. AWS CLI, Google CLI.
Also, just found out that Ubuntu 24.04 included Docker 28 but 26.04 includes Docker 29 which is a major breaking change and never mentioned in here. Or do we want to repeat updating Docker debacle from earlier this year?
