I realize that the implementation of this is somewhat repetitious, but I couldn't figure out a good way to implement this that wasn't also super complicated. Fixes GitTools#473

It would be good if we could factor this logic into core. Having two implementations is not great. Ideas on how we could do that? |

Also, getting some more tests around these changes would be good. Are you able to look at adding a test or two? |
