Ability to reorder categories

Fairly simple request. Would be great to adjust the order categories are displayed in for transaction selection and on budgets.

Would be great as a first step to reflect how they are created in the Categories page, not by alphabetical order as it is right now

How would a user know where to find a category if they are not sorted alphabetically? Sounds like poor UX to me. 🤷

Thing is there's inconsistency when choosing a category from the New Transaction popup and when clicking Uncategorised button in the Transactions list

The second option is sorted Alphabetically, that's true, but that's on the Category level and not all sub-categories.

Yes! That helps a lot and now we're on the same page ... I've experienced the same frustration, but not sure "reordering" would help, as it also passes the burden of the operation to the user which is always the last resort option if we can avoid it.

When I noticed the list in new transaction what my intuition wanted was to re-create the nested hierarchy of the transactions list one (also fixing that one to sort subcategories!) Wouldn't that be more desirable than adding a whole other lot of UI to organize sorting?

Also, since we're discussing OCD as it relates to categories ... my 2 cents' for people who might want to react. :-)

Finding the right balance of categories to get started is hard: too many and you scare the user away, too few and people think "not powerful enough for me!" and then there is the whole OCD around colors/organization (to sub-categorize or not sub-categorize, that is a question!)

After many years of Quicken usage, I do like my subcategories (cut orthogonally by tags ... a discussion for another day!) and the Sure code has a little known rake demo_data:sample task that creates what I find to be a very beautiful set of categories like so:
