Hive install with sensor nodes, creating an elasticsearch API key to allow scripting access.. ES security enabled?

I have a HIVE server set up on an internal network (behind a firewall) and multiple sensor nodes on different networks sending data to the HIVE.. these sensor/honeypots are on other networks.. and I have firewall rules that allow access between sensors and HIVE.

I need to gain access to the HIVE via python to pull data for analysis.. I can do it in python using my master/root login and password.. but I dont want to hand that out..

ES has the ability to create API keys with specific access.. (example: API key that allows only read access).. that requires elasticsearch to be set up with:

xpack.security.enabled: true
xpack.security.authc.api_key.enabled: true

I cant seem to find anywhere to know if the two things are enabled.. and if they aren't.. will enabling them break things?
