Can I manually add a free subscription to a customers?

I have a free tier to my product that all logged in customers automatically get. Can I manually subscribe new users to this product?

I am also trying to get this to work. I have a free tier with limited AI credits that I would like to track. But I would also like to automatically give all users this tier.

Right now, I need to create a checkout link for users to redeem the free credit but this is unneeded since its free and doesn't require a CC or billing information. The user just ends up clicking proceed which is an unneeded step and adds friction to the sign up process.
