I've an active subscription for a year but it keeps throwing this error and the Github copilot fails

i recently signed up for a paid plan which, until just now, has worked well from inside of VS Code. But, i'm just sitting down to start code, and i got this response on my first prompts. I'd been away from my machine for at least 10 hours, and so the "rate limit" assertion seems misguided.

Edit: in my case the problem appears temporary. i only got the "rate limit" response for a few minutes.

This is happening to me today. I pay for the Business Co-Pilot not on the free version and I haven't done much of anything differently today than any other day and it jsut start throttling me for what seems like no apparent reason. Any ideas as to why this happens randomly?

@JimNayzium Just happened for me. I also have a paid version. Tried restarting vscode, open a new chat but no luck. Seems like an ongoing issue for many. I saw there are lots of recent comments in here microsoft/vscode-copilot-release#732

Same here - corporate group license ( I think) . I've been using copilot edits quite a bit - hit the rate limit in one hour of work this morning, locked out for 9 hours. Using mainly the copilot edits feature.

Me, as well. I only use it for Visual Studio, haven't used VS in about a week, and suddenly I've exceeded my usage? They have no problem taking my money, but no way to reach any support to figure this out?

I am encountering an issue that is affecting my ability to use your plugin. I keep receiving the error "Rate Limit Exceeded," and this happens every day. This significantly hinders my usage of the plugin, which is unacceptable given that I have a paid subscription.

Same is happening every other time I share the error code from debug file for reviewing.
Now, it did start to impact my productivity. I can't move forward with the system stopping me. Anyone knows how to resolve it?

also not excited about this. I am asking myself if I somehow let my subscription run out after one (!) :Copilot invocation in the vim plugin gives me the rate limit message. Please do better asap.

I am having the same issue. After a couple of chats it returns a rate limit error. It makes it pretty worthless and not worth paying for. I'd rather pay more and get a decent limit as it's able to work with me one just a couple of things before I need to wait an hour to use it again. Really bad.

Please like this comment if you think this is utterly unacceptable and pledge to cancel the subscription by 1/1/2025 if it is not addressed.

I've been plagued by this and tried for days and weeks to figure out the issue and there is no clear reason why I'm dumping money into an AI that I can't even use.

I am fed up.

For anyone seeing this today, please don't hesitate to comment. We are all livid about the waste of money here, and I personally wouldn't be absolved without a refund or a free voucher assuming they fix this.

Why ignore such a simple problem that literally every other company has done properly.

It's pretty brutal actually our company has enterprise we can't buy a more expensive plan outside of buying additional tokens which is outrageously expensive. For us it's every few hours no switching to preview or different model fixes it just wait.

I'm getting the same error for my custom API key for Anthropic. Is there any way of defining rate limit so it does not exceed it? I understand it will be slower but at least it won't fail after 20 minutes of processing.

If you're getting a rate limit with a custom API key, are you sure the rate limit is from Copilot?

Is there really no response from Microsoft / GitHub on this? How are they expected to compete when this is happening so consistently? My flow gets interrupted so often with this rate limit stuff! And I don't even let copilot go agentic without my approval of every command so it is not like it is going off and firing that many requests quickly. Just consistent requests over an hour or two and then I hit a rate limit. So frustrating.

What I saw was immediate rate limit on first use

Then rate limits dring whatever the buzzword is for LLM usage before a single line of code is edited, it jsut uses API and then before doing anything useful exits

I just tried it and finally saw some code edits and was getting excited, then it asked for me to click "Continue" with a vague continue to iterate? question and naturally I clicked Continue and it started complaining about have no idea what my needs were and "suggested ways for me to ask better questions (like "Continue" was my prompt.... geezus)

I find Copilot completely useless from a usabability perspective for the last week, before that I quite Cursor because it was so much better before what ever changed to cause these current problems

No response yet. They've lost at least 100+ members who contacted me saying they cancelled on 1/1/2025.
That is at least a loss of at least hundreds in recurring annual revenue from JUST THOSE WHO I HAVE PERSONALLY SPOKEN TO.
Let alone thousands who moved.

It is sad. Github/Microsoft/Notion have all lost their way trying to pinch pennies and implement AI without taking time to do it right.

I'm getting rate limits from Claude Sonnet 4.0 today, but I am switching to other models I've never used and they're all giving me the same exhausted this models reate limit, try a different model. I literally haven't used them before.

I have Copilot Business. Would upgrading to Enterprise help me here? Loss of vibe coding productivity is slowing down my project :P
