About GitHub Education Submitting Application

Hi everyone,

I'm a student form China. I used to submit Github Education 7 months ago. I have submitted many applications, but they were all denied. The reasons are always about VPN and my name.
In fact, it is difficult for a Chinese student to suff on a foreign web without VPN, if I do not use VPN, I cannot even sign in your submit web. But if I use VPN, you will deny me.
In China, people have a different naming convention compared to English speakers, we put our Xing (which in US is last name) on the first, and our Ming (which in US is first name) on the last, so our name seems a bit "obb".
My university classmate's application today was denied by you mutiple times precisely for these reason, how to resolve it?

Hi @Navenshen,

Unfortunately using a VPN isn't allowed, you should also translate your academic proof from Chinese to English and then fill in your billing information and your GitHub profile with your translated full name exactly as it appears on your academic transcript. The automated system is unable to correctly read languages that don't use the Latin alphabet.

If you still get rejected, submit the application using another device, such as a smartphone or another PC.

Hi, a question is how to fill Chinese name. For example, my Chinese name is Xiang Wang(in Chinese order), and in English Xiang should be my last name, Wang should be my first name. Which one should I put in the first name block and the other put in the last name block? Or I need to put "XiangWang" in both of them? (In translation apps, my name is Xiang Wang, but GitHub denied me because of my name.)

Hey @Navenshen, you can try entering both in the two fields. Note that you have to update your billing info and complete your GitHub profile accordingly, for example "Xiang Wang" and not "xiangwang".
