Home dashboard update [Public preview feedback]

We made improvements to the content and layout of the home dashboard, designed to enable users to see, understand, and take action on their most important work in a single view. The default view of the home dashboard now displays short, customizable lists of recent agent tasks, pull requests, and issues. The feed view has moved to its own page at github.com/feed when the preview is enabled.

You can access the dashboard update by enabling New Dashboard Experience in Feature preview.

What's new

• A new agent module shows the status of all your agent tasks and provides links to the task session.
• Pull request and issue modules list your most recent pull requests and issues for quick navigation to your in-progress work. Each module has filtering options to customize the lists.
• The new Feed tab is the new home for the feed. It can also be found at github.com/feed. The feed's content and filters have not changed. When using the site on a mobile device, you can find a link to the feed in the hamburger navigation.
• We've applied fresh visual and UI updates to the dashboard.
• Action menus enable you to kick-off your work from any of the new modules. You can assign issues to Copilot coding agent or open pull requests and issues in Copilot Chat as references, with more shortcuts to come.

I dont particularly care much for the Github changelogs that replaced other repos I might be interested in.

I believe he's referring to the "Trending repositories" as Justin said. It's disappeared from the new dashboard and even the old one, but it's been a while... That was very useful for checking current trends. Now I have to access it via the URL /trending or /explore.

The section on the right is something many people dislike, but if going to keep it, I think that the trending section would be a good card, even to avoid leaving an space just for Changelog.

I like the new homepage, I missed when it was first removed! 😄

1. I think we should be able to sort the rows, I mean "Agent sessions", "Pull requests" and "Issues".
2. The repositories on the left is a duplicate of the repositories in the hamburger menu. I think the one in the hamburger menu should be removed.
3. Add extra / commands. I think it is missing a "spaces" slash which would use a specific space as a context.
   4. Add the ability to see the old feed somewhere. It is quite useful to track releases or new first issues of stared repositories for example. It is available in the top left corner. I am just blind! 🙈

Points 1 and 2 make sense and we've been considering them. I'd love to hear from other people on this as well.

1. Besides re-arranging the modules, are there other types of customization you're expecting?
2. How do you and others navigate to repos – is it primarily using the list on the dashboard, not in the hamburger menu?

On point 3, you can use the dropdown in the Copilot input to select a Space to reference

Thanks for checking it out! You can hide the Copilot input from github.com/settings/copilot.

The input's functionality has evolved a lot since it was first introduced on the dashboard. I'd encourage you to play around with it and see how it can help your workflow. I'm curious to hear from you or others what would make it more useful.

Thanks for the help @justinbyo . I was coming here to comment the same as @cloudglides , so it may be worth it to make the option to turn off the AI stuff on the Dashboard more discoverable. Perhaps you can have an option right there next to the chat to turn it off. I know MS is really try hard to push this AI nonsense everywhere, but I don't want it. It would be good to opt out of it globally. Or even better - make it opt-in

A few thoughts:

• I have a PR from 2016 which appears in the list (and the most recent activity dates from 2020), that's not exactly what I'd call recent. 😅
• The list items have excessively large paddings, I'd prefer a (much) more compact view.
• Sometimes the conversation continues in closed issues/PRs. It would be nice to continue showing them for some time after they're closed.
• I don't care about agent sessions, so I unchecked both the "open" and "closed" filters, but the list still shows and takes precious space on top of the page.
• An option to view the feed below the lists would be nice.

The PR from 2016 – that's weird. The pull request and issues lists are ordered by last updated. The item with the newest update will be at the top. So there may have been a recent update (maybe a comment, change in assignment, label?) If it's still not clear, let me know we can connect and figure out what's going on.

Also take a look at the filters, that might help you narrow down your results to your liking.

I mean, the previous "recent activity" feature (which showed in the left margin of the homepage, under "repositories") limited the view to issues/PRs which were active in the last 2 weeks. Then, they were removed.

Currently, I have 4 PRs open: 2 recent ones, and 2 very old ones. https://github.com/pulls shows the following:

Note the old PRs are both in the list. I left comments/reviews on the additional ones that are added in comparison to github.com/pulls. Only the top 2 are recent.

I know about the filters, but I definitely want the PRs I authored in the list. 🙂

Got it. I'm assuming that means issues or PRs that aren't really relevant to you but might still be open. Would you want to hide them permanently or until there's new activity?

Also take a look at the filters, that might help you narrow down your results to your liking.

Creating an issue from the home page feels ass backwards

There are a few different ways to create an issue from the dashboard. Are you talking about using the /create-issue command in the Copilot input?

There are some longstanding issues that I watch, but don't want to be at the top of my feed.

Got it. That issue is at the top because it was updated last week it looks like, and the issues are ordered by latest update. Would you want to do something like snooze or hide that issue?

Also, I notice you aren't assigned to that issue. If you turn off the "Involves me" filter and just use the "Assigned to me" filter that might work better for you.

Why does this appear on hover? Hover is terrible UX for touch inputs. Make it a menu or something always there. I don't want to accidentally click this.

Thanks for the reply! The menu looks good. Why not make this default for desktop too? Desktops have more space so I don't see a reason to hide it behind a hover action.

Also the copilot icon appearing in middle of two PRs might not be ideal.

Thanks for the feedback. For anyone that missed it, you can still find the feed at github.com/feed. The content and algorithm of the feed hasn't changed at all, just the URL.

Unfortunately, having this URL available is not enough. When I click on the GitHub logo here, I will still fall into the root domain, where I prefer to have the feed as a default open view.

There's an option for the chat box, but it's completely buried in the settings: go to copilot features and disable the "Dashboard entry point" setting.

hi! Weird issue, not sure if it's related to the recent Azure issue, but when switching organizations it shows an infinite loading. Looking in my network requests, I'm not seeing any timed out requests, but haven't looked into it too deeply it.

I see, that theres something there, potentially great even, but the current implementation is basically useless.
May I recommend potentially using a more widget centric approach, maybe similar to the homeassistant dashboards?

Hear me out:
You have a edit button somewhere in the corner or in some menu, this opens up a edit dialog. There you can define the number of columns and drag around cards as well as remove or readd them.
This would mean, that;

• Copilot
• Agent sessions
• Pull requests
• Issues
• Github Changelog
• Feed
• (potentially more in the future?)

Would all be cards I can have multiple instances of with different filters arranged however I prefer.
This would allow every user to configure the dashboard how theyd like and make it a very powerful place.
I personally would personally have 2 columns, get rid of the copilot card (or maybe shove it to the side in case i do need it), get rid of the agent sessions, have the pull requests filtered for mentioned and review requested, issues below and then the github feed.
In the right columns id have the github changelog, full pullrequest feed and potentially copilot card.
The great thing is, nobody has to like my layout because its card based and people can just create and delete cards however they desire.

One thing that would be great tho to have as a card is a dump of all open pullrequests of selected repos. eg id want to have a card where I see all open pullrequests on my most important 3 repos.

Reading through the responses tho, its clear that basically everyone hates the static and radically different, often less useful, implementation. Why try so hard? Make it customizable! Nows the chance! Mobile had widgets for years, it worked out decently well. Basically every dashboard has some sense of customization and homeassitant has a great drag and drop builder.

I would like to be able to see more than the three latest pull requests and issues. Oops, just found the "number of results" setting - I didn't initially think to look in the filter menu.

The "view all" buttons are not accurate, because they take me to a list of my own submissions, rather than all recent ones relevant to me.

As AI systems “containerize” online services and siphon off their users, the open-source community may be the last durable counterweight. GitHub will likely try to containerize AI in response, but this needs to be an edge-led effort—not a GitHub-led one. To keep GitHub resilient and sustainable, partner tooling, open APIs, and other edge-control initiatives should be front and center. This may matter more than any single UI/UX tweak: the community will protect GitHub from AI disruption, not the other way around.

The near-term risk isn’t “rogue AI,” it’s platform capture: defaults set outside GitHub that steer attention, rules, and money. GitHub stays resilient if maintainers can choose, route, and verify AI on their own terms. We must build this into the Github UX:

• Plural by default: model-swappable, policy-routed, visible.
• Provenance by construction: signed inputs/outputs; tamper-evident logs.
• Local-first fallbacks: keep working if a provider throttles/fails.
• Open hooks, portable configs: no “magic” you can’t inspect or fork.

Concrete shippables

• Edge Control Panel (Repo → Settings → AI): bring-your-own model/keys/router; YAML policies with price/latency caps & safety profiles.
• Provenance on PRs/Actions: show which model touched what; export a Merkle-indexed audit log tied to commits/releases.
• Model-neutral Copilot mode: pluggable backends; visible model badges; per-repo/per-branch selection.

Outcome to aim for

• Maintainers can swap models in minutes, prove what AI did, reproduce results, and keep shipping during outages—inside GitHub, not behind another platform’s glass.
