Error when installing nvm

Hello!

I was trying to install nvm in order to be able to install packages globally without having to switch to being an admin, however an error popped up that said:

Failed to clone nvm repo. Please report this!

What does this mean, and how do I resolve this issue?

Presumably you used the install script - do you have git installed? What command did you run?

How do you install git? I did not know I needed that.
The command that I ran was:

curl -o- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/nvm-sh/nvm/v0.39.0/install.sh | bash

You don't necessarily require it - the install script shouldn't be trying to clone the repo tho unless it's there. What does which git say?

/usr/bin/git

ok, so you do have git installed. What's git --version? What happens if you try git clone https://github.com/nvm-sh/nvm.git $HOME/.nvm?

For git --version, I got:

xcode-select: note: no developer tools were found at '/Applications/Xcode.app', requesting install. Choose an option in the dialog to download the command line developer tools.

For the git cloning code, I got:

xcode-select: note: no developer tools were found at '/Applications/Xcode.app', requesting install. Choose an option in the dialog to download the command line developer tools.

Ah, ok so that’s the issue. You need to install the Xcode command line tools.

That’s lash’s the first step on any Mac someone wants to develop on. run xcode-select --install, i believe.

I got this when I pasted the Xcode install code in:

xcode-select: note: install requested for command line developer tools

That should open a pop up, where you have to proceed using the GUI.

Yes, since you need to install them

Once that process is completed - and git, curl, etc all work as expected on the command line - rerun the install script for nvm.
