If we already have cursor paid, why do we need an extra API set for Taskmaster? Can you somehow remove it? It prevents me from using it.

This is by using what we call MCP sampling that we don't currently support, so we use your Claude API key to save your credits for code generation.

To clarify @Crunchyman-ralph - when set up as an MCP server within Cursor, would you mind helping me understand what request use the Anthropic API key, vs. what uses Cursor premium requests?

From my testing, I'm unable to run parse_prd without an API key.

Given parse_prd is presumably a prompt, would it be possible to copy-paste this prompt into Cursor to get it to create it without the API key?

I think it's in task-manager.js, but I'm not sure where the 'creation prompt' is.

(for context: I'd also rather use Cursor premium requests. But if it's not possible, I'd like to understand what requests are going to my Anthropic API key vs. Cursor requests).

No, you cannot just copy the prompt into Cursor that’s not how it works.

parse PRD is an entire workflow, not just a prompt

Taskmaster commands run in the terminal. They do not consume your Cursor credits or the Cursor client in any way. The Cursor Agent is able to call the CLI or MCP commands to trigger those commands and make their result available to the agent as context.

Using the AI client of the IDE itself is out of scope of the project today. Which is why it required API keys.

It would be great if it could all run within the Cursor client without any external APIs, but as I understand it, that requires sampling, which may not be a priority for you at the moment.

I am not getting an Anthropic subscription simply for this.
I would love to be able to use this with any LLM we have access to., since it seems very useful.

you can now use it with claude code, gemini cli, codex, we've been cooking, but soon we have other ideas so you can use it with any ai agent to be honest :D
