interestingly, the 3060 isn't much faster than the 2060 -
So we might not be as far off as I'd initially calculated. |

Following discord monologue explaining why RTX 3060 is current baseline -

I think our min-spec for 1080p, highest detail rendering will have to be a 3060 or equivalent.
i would much prefer a 2060, but it's just probably not going to hit 60 FPS consistently at that level until we do significantly more work.
i think part of it is because we use high-quality, non-temporal rendering techniques such as for SSRL and SSAO.
our techniques are rather artisanal because of our 'clarity is king' value statement for rendering.
and there's not too much we're willing to compromise away on that.
but that's not a full explanation.
that said, i'm still not sure what remaining corners there are to cut.
if this block editor stuff goes well, it should provided a way to do some occlusion culling, which might help some.
then there's also light-binning that could be done in the deferred lighting pass as well (#1274).
together - if they go as expected - we might be able to target 2060 and equivalent as baseline.
@deanjlee - my goal for your 4060 would be to run project 5 in a range of 90-120 FPS.
if we can manage that somehow, we could probably reduce the baseline GPU to 2060.
we're at the point where devs can no longer presume consumer-grade GPUs will continue to grow much in terms of power.
as availability continues to be massively constrained, it's just as likely for installed GPU performance to stagnate or even degrade.
while it's not a happy situation, it is pretty strong evidence that our conservative outlook for rendering approaches was prescient.
Ultimately, we want our baseline to become the RTX 2060 or equivalent, but that's still a ways away. For now it remains an RTX 3060.
